Tomah VA fishing tournament brings together Veterans and community

A story of community, camaraderie and celebration

The Tomah VA recently welcomed dozens of Community Living Center and Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program Veterans to its Annual Fishing Tournament, which highlights the Medical Center’s dedication to enriching the patient experience and helping inpatient Veterans reconnect with hobbies they love.

Tomah VA extends deep gratitude to its valued partners at the Genoa National Fish Hatchery, who generously stocked the campus pond two weeks prior with 500 rainbow trout, each averaging 11 inches, alongside channel catfish, bluegill, largemouth bass, yellow perch and black crappie. Their efforts ensured the pond was well-stocked, creating an unforgettable experience for every angler who cast a line.

At the heart of the day were the Veterans: about 40 inpatients from Tomah VA, joined by 86 Tomah Middle School volunteers from Team 7-2. These young helpers paired with the Veterans, assisting with baiting hooks, casting lines and sharing stories. Their laughter and enthusiasm filled the pond area, making every moment brighter.

A community effort

Coordinated by the Community Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE) office, it brought together VA staff, community organizations and local students to create an unforgettable experience.

Community partners played pivotal roles. The Vernon County American Legion’s catfish fry was a highlight. The American Legion 7th District provided prizes, ensuring every catch felt special. Friends of the Upper Mississippi prepared and served fish to refuel the anglers.

La Crosse Fish and Wildlife Service attended to weight and measurements, while also cleaning the pond and equipping volunteers with extra poles. The Wisconsin Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) District 11 leadership team kept everyone hydrated, handing out water bottles to Veterans and volunteers.

VA teamwork in action

VA staff helped behind the scenes. Roads and Grounds staff prepared the pond area. Clinical dietitians ensured all had nametags indicating dietary needs, and food service staff ensured Veterans were provided timely breakfasts, so every Veteran started the day nourished. Recreation staff orchestrated event logistics and addressed accessibility considerations. Nursing and recreation staff were at event monitoring and supporting Veterans throughout the morning. Jennifer Bailey, the Green Environmental Management System coordinator, provided on-site coordination support for last-minute needs.

VA volunteers brought essential energy, too: prepping poles, preparing bait and serving as student engagement coordinators. And for the non-fishers, there were plenty of other ways to connect and have fun, including outdoor games like beanbags or ladder ball.

The laughter, camaraderie, and heartfelt interactions showed the true spirit of the VA community. Thanks to everyone’s dedication, the Tomah VA Annual Fishing Tournament celebrated of partnership and gratitude.
