Honoring the National Day of Service

As we mark the 25th anniversary of September 11, the National Day of Service stands as a powerful reminder to honor those affected by that day and the Veterans who have served our nation in its aftermath. This year, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) invites individuals, families, community groups and organizations to make a difference by volunteering for Veterans, their families, caregivers and survivors.

Diverse ways to serve

VA offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities to suit every interest and schedule. One of the most impactful roles is as a volunteer driver with the Volunteer Transportation Network. Drivers help Veterans get to their VA appointments and build meaningful connections along the way. Many volunteers report forming lasting friendships with the Veterans they transport, making the experience rewarding for everyone involved.

For those who prefer virtual engagement, the Compassionate Contact Corps connects trained volunteers with Veterans experiencing loneliness or social isolation. Through regular phone calls, volunteers share conversations about sports, hobbies and cherished memories, providing comfort and companionship.

Other fulfilling assignments include:

• Assisting at food banks to combat food insecurity
• Providing wayfinding support at VA medical centers
• Greeting Veterans as a Red Coat Ambassador
• Participating in community service projects
• Visiting hospitalized Veterans to express gratitude
