Advanced Physics Instrumentation (API)

Supports the acquisition, development and implementation of the advanced instrumentation needed for NSF MPS physics research programs.

Supports the acquisition, development and implementation of the advanced instrumentation needed for NSF MPS physics research programs.

Synopsis

The Advanced Physics Instrumentation program supports instrumentation that enables academic physics research groups in the U.S. to remain competitive in the rapidly changing global scientific environment. MPS Physics accepts proposals to support such instrumentation because the costs are often significantly higher than what research awards to individual investigators can typically provide.

Principal investigators (PIs) cannot apply directly to the Advanced Physics Instrumentation program. PIs that require specialized equipment should request funding for that equipment as part of a regular proposal to the relevant MPS Physics core research program. The proposal will be reviewed and prioritized by that program as part of NSF’s standard merit review process. For proposals involving the development or implementation of complex instrumentation (typically at or above $1 million), reviewers will assess the applicant’s ability to successfully deliver the instrumentation within the proposed budget and timeframe, and through its lifecycle.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to describe all foreseeable costs in their proposed budgets, including adequate plans for risk mitigation and project management. Proposed projects may be evaluated through additional technical, cost, schedule or management reviews. Applicants should upload project management documentation as a supplementary document, if applicable.

PIs should contact the relevant program prior to submission of any proposal that includes a request for advanced instrumentation resources.
