VA support is for every Veteran

If you’ve ever wondered whether VA’s suicide prevention support is really meant for you, here’s the short answer: yes.

Some Veterans wonder if they’ve “earned” the right to reach out. Maybe they figure someone else has it worse. Maybe they’re not sure if their service qualifies. None of that changes the answer: There’s no minimum amount of hardship required, and no one’s keeping score. You deserve support, and VA has it for you.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve never set foot in a VA facility, live hours from the nearest one, or aren’t enrolled in VA healthcare. You served, and that means these resources belong to you. The Veterans Crisis Line and the people behind VA’s suicide prevention work are here for every Veteran, and for the families and supporters who care about them.

If you live in a rural area

Living far from a VA medical center doesn’t put support out of reach. Roughly a quarter of Veterans live in rural communities, and VA has built ways to connect them with services. The Veterans Crisis Line is available by phone, chat or text from wherever you are. The VA Office of Rural Health and telehealth resources can also bring care to you, not the other way around.

If you’d rather talk with someone closer to home, Vet Centers offer free, confidential counseling in community settings, with options like Mobile Vet Centers that reach rural areas. They’re open to eligible Veterans, service members, and their families and supporters, and you don’t need to be enrolled in VA healthcare to use them.

If you’re not enrolled in VA healthcare

You also don’t have to be enrolled in VA healthcare to reach the Veterans Crisis Line, ever. And if you’re going through a suicide crisis, under the COMPACT Act you can get emergency suicide care at any VA or non-VA health facility at no cost, even if you’ve never enrolled. There’s a first time for everyone, and you don’t have to know the “right” way to do it. When someone contacts the Veterans Crisis Line, they’re connected with a real person who listens with care. There’s no judgment, no pressure and you stay in control of the conversation.
