The story of Marine Corps Veteran Esther Castañeda

Published September 18, 2026 · 3 min read
· By Thirstier News

When Esther Castañeda arrived at Camp Pendleton in 1979, she wasn’t trying to make history. The SoCal native wanted the same opportunity to train as the other Marines around her.

There was just one problem: Women weren’t being sent to the rifle range.

She wanted to go.

Castañeda was denied the opportunity because she was a woman. That changed when a colonel gave her the chance she had been asking for, and she became the first woman to go to the rifle range at Camp Pendleton.

When the opportunity finally came, she made it count: She earned her Rifle Expert Badge.

Decades later, she still has the photographs from the range—a reminder of a moment when persistence finally met opportunity. That experience became part of a much larger story, a lifetime of stepping into spaces where women weren’t traditionally expected to be.

A life of taking the road less traveled

Castañeda served three years on active duty and another three in the reserve, working in supply and as a forklift operator. Leaving the military didn’t change her appetite for challenge.

She drove a truck for FedEx. She completed the LAPD Reserve Academy. She rides a Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200. And these days, you may find her in Long Beach, California, learning to turn wood on a lathe through a woodworking class at VA.

Looking back, she sees military service as more than a chapter of her life.

“Military service is an eye-opening, challenging opportunity to push yourself beyond what you perceived you could endure and accomplish. It’s a collection of experiences that result in personal growth and respect for each other as humans, as Veterans, as United States Americans.”

Service after service

Today, Castañeda continues giving back by feeding people experiencing homelessness in her community. It’s quieter work than stepping onto the rifle range, but it reflects the same sense of service she has carried throughout her life.

VA has also remained part of her journey. She says VA mental health and medical care have helped support her well-being since leaving the military.

Her story is not simply about being first, it’s about what happened when someone finally gave her the opportunity to try.

From a rifle range at Camp Pendleton to a truck cab, a police academy, a Harley and now a woodshop in Long Beach, Esther Castañeda has spent a lifetime stepping into unfamiliar territory and discovering what she could do once she got there.

Sometimes the opportunity to prove yourself begins with someone opening the door and having the determination to walk through it.
