SBA resources help Veterans build a future in entrepreneurship

Across the country, many Veterans are looking to entrepreneurship as their next mission. The resilience and leadership gained through military service often translates naturally to the realities of owning and operating a small business. Veterans are starting new ventures, acquiring existing businesses and growing operations that fit their long-term goals. Federal programs exist to help them take these steps confidently and with support.

In the latest episode of “At the Table,” VA Deputy Secretary Paul R. Lawrence, Ph.D., talks with Small Business Administration Deputy Administrator Bill Briggs about how Veterans can explore entrepreneurship and use the resources available to help them succeed. Their conversation highlights why Veterans make strong business owners, the support SBA provides and how to begin building a business.

Briggs encourages Veterans who are curious about starting a business to begin at SBA.gov/vets. The website provides an overview of SBA programs and connects Veterans with staff who can help them understand their options. SBA supports Veterans, service members and military spouses through free counseling offered at Veteran Business Outreach Centers and Small Business Development Centers across the country.

Boots to Business

One of the most helpful programs for transitioning service members and Veterans is Boots to Business. It acts as a “boot camp for entrepreneurship” and teaches the basic steps of developing a business plan, understanding the market, managing finances and preparing for the early phases of starting a business. Veterans can participate whether they have business experience or none. Counselors guide Veterans through the process of turning an idea into a realistic plan.

SBA’s network of advisers also helps Veterans learn about opportunities in their communities, state-level programs and local partnerships. These counselors have supported thousands of entrepreneurs and they provide informed guidance based on each Veteran’s goals.

Funding

Capital is an important part of starting or expanding any small business. Briggs explains that SBA offers several loan programs designed to meet Veterans’ needs. Microloans provide up to $50,000 to help launch or grow a business. The 7(a)-loan program offers flexible financing options for many business needs. Veterans Advantage and Veterans Express loans provide reduced fees and tailored options specifically for Veterans.

SBA counselors help Veterans understand how much funding they need. They assist with developing financial projections and creating a smart plan before taking on debt.

Franchising

Many Veterans are interested in franchising or purchasing an established “business in a box” model. Briggs notes that SBA’s Franchise Directory includes more than 6,000 franchises eligible for SBA financing. The directory helps Veterans narrow their search to franchising opportunities backed by SBA programs.

SBA advisers can help Veterans review fees, expected returns and operational responsibilities. Although franchising can simplify some aspects of running a business, Veterans benefit from working with SBA counselors who can help them choose a franchise that aligns with their goals and resources.

Contracting

SBA also certifies Veteran-owned small businesses and service-disabled Veteran-owned small businesses for federal contracting opportunities. SBA took over this responsibility from VA in 2023. Certification allows Veterans to compete for federal set-asides, sole-source awards and procurement opportunities. Many state and local governments also offer contracting programs specifically for Veterans.

This pathway is especially beneficial for Veterans who have experience working within federal agencies and understand their operational needs. Certification helps open the door to work in areas such as information technology, construction, security and professional services.

Success stories

What does success look like? Briggs shares several examples of Veterans who have used SBA resources to start and grow their own businesses. 3D Security in New Mexico is a Veteran-owned training firm certified as a service-disabled Veteran-owned small business. Warfighter Tobacco in Texas was started by former special operations Veterans who expanded their business using SBA support during the COVID-19 pandemic. Battle Site Technologies in Ohio is a Veteran-run company that provides communication tools to Special Forces and hires only Veterans.

Their stories demonstrate how Veterans can use SBA programs to build successful, sustainable businesses.
