Labor Department resources help Veterans build meaningful careers in America’s workforce

Across the country, Veterans are preparing for their next mission after service. Many know that VA supports their transition, but fewer realize also that the Department of Labor (DoL) operates a dedicated agency focused on helping Veterans, transitioning service members and military spouses find meaningful civilian careers. These programs ensure that every Veteran has a fair shot at employment that matches their skills, strengths and long-term goals.

In the latest episode of “At the Table,” VA Deputy Secretary Paul R. Lawrence, Ph.D, spoke with Jeremiah Workman, assistant secretary of the Department of Labor’s Veterans Employment and Training Service (VETS). Their conversation explored how Veterans can use DOL resources, why trades and defense related careers are strong fits, and how DOL is expanding opportunities in trucking, manufacturing and defense for those transitioning out of service.

Helping Veterans succeed in civilian careers

Workman explained how VETS supports Veterans through programs like Transition Assistance Program and Jobs for Veterans State Grants. The agency also safeguards employment protections under USERRA, which is especially important for National Guard and Reserve members who return from activation and need assurance that their civilian jobs will be waiting for them.

A strong fit in the defense industrial base

Workman highlighted the defense industrial base as one of the best matches for Veterans preparing for civilian work. The discipline and mission-minded focus gained in uniform translate naturally into careers such as welding, electrical work, trucking and other skilled trades. These industries offer long term stability and meaningful work. Many roles are open and ready to be filled by transitioning service members.

Trades careers offer high pay and low debt

Many Americans believe a four-year degree is the only pathway to success. Workman emphasized that trades careers often provide Veterans with strong earning potential and little to no student debt. Many Veterans in welding, electrical work and similar trades earn six-figure salaries. Others start their own businesses and carry their leadership and discipline into civilian entrepreneurship.

Starting an apprenticeship

Veterans who want to explore the trades can begin by visiting the DOL VETS website and connecting with their nearest American Job Center. These centers exist in every state and territory and are staffed with specialists trained to support Veterans and military families. Veterans can also visit Apprenticeship.gov to explore thousands of apprenticeship opportunities nationwide. Many align directly with military skills.

Freedom Haulers opens doors in trucking

A major announcement in the conversation was the new Freedom Haulers initiative. This effort will help bring thousands of Veterans into the trucking workforce. Employers such as J.B. Hunt have committed to hiring large numbers of Veterans every year. With experience operating heavy machinery and tactical vehicles, Veterans are well suited for trucking roles that support America’s supply chain.

Support for caregivers, spouses and families

DOL also supports caregivers, spouses and survivors through employment workshops available on installations and online. These workshops provide job search guidance, resume support and connections to employers who actively seek to hire members of the military community. They help families transition smoothly and confidently.
